Waistbeads represent my culture, beauty, femininity and intimacy.

 

I was introduced to waistbeads very early in life when my father asked my mother to make sure all his daughters were fitted with waistbeads as part of our 'rite of passage'. I immediately fell in love with the colours, shapes and textures of the beads against my skin.

 

After searching for some waistbeads to buy in the UK and being unsuccessful, I decided to take matters into my own hands. Literally.

 

By divine coincidence, while away on holiday in New York I stumbled across a bead shop on Fifth Avenue and it was as if I had walked into bead heaven. This was my opportunity to stock up and I went to town.

 

Initially, I started working on my own collection of waistbeads ~ different colours to match my moods and underwear ~ but enjoyed it so much and produced so many that I was encouraged to sell them. This is how the TNP Waistbeads project was born and I am enjoying every moment of the journey.

 

It is extremely fulfilling to make something with my own hands knowing that each carefully made piece will be worn and enjoyed by somebody who enjoys wearing waistbeads as much as I do.

 

I approach my craft with great enthusiasm, treating each piece as if it was being made for my personal use. I just can't sell what I wouldn’t want to wear myself.
